WUDIL, KANO — The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUST), Wudil, has officially cancelled a proposed eight-week mandatory field trip for 400-level Fisheries students to New Bussa, Niger State, citing significant security concerns.
Proactive Decision-Making
In a statement released on Thursday by the Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, the university clarified that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Musa Yakasai, had rejected the proposal for the New Bussa trip well before public alarm was raised.
The administration emphasized that the safety and welfare of students both on and off campus are the institution's highest priorities. The university management underscored that they have "never joked" with the security of their students and had actively sought a safer alternative once the risks associated with the Niger State location were evaluated.
New Location Secured: Tiga Dam
Following the cancellation of the New Bussa trip, the Department of Fisheries has been directed to relocate the mandatory field exercise to Tiga Dam in Kano State.
The university leadership confirmed that the Tiga Dam site has been vetted to ensure it meets academic requirements while providing a secure environment for the students. The institution has reached out to parents and guardians to calm anxieties, explicitly stating:
"There is no plan to take our students to New Bussa or any other unsecured areas for any activity."
Addressing Parental Concerns
The cancellation follows reports of significant opposition from parents and community stakeholders, who had expressed fears regarding the security situation in parts of Niger State. The university’s swift clarification serves to reassure families that their concerns were heard and acted upon, ensuring that the students can complete their mandatory practical training without exposure to unnecessary risk.
