The Management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing following the death of a student, Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo.

The decision was contained in a notification dated October 20 and signed by Dr Taiwo Omirin, Coordinator of Programmes and Head of School, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director of the hospital.

According to the notice, the suspension affects students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions, including master’s student nurses and students undergoing orientation.

Students residing in the school's hostel were also directed to vacate the facility with immediate effect.

Management cites need for investigation

The hospital said the decision followed the death of Taiwo, which had reportedly triggered unrest within the hospital community.

Management said the suspension was necessary to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student's death.

It appealed to affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply with the directive pending further communication.

The hospital also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the suspension.

Taiwo was a post-basic psychiatric nursing student at the institution. Reports indicate that he died on October 16 after suffering a severe asthma attack.

The circumstances surrounding his death have since become the subject of controversy, with fellow students demanding an investigation into the medical response he received.

Student's death sparks protests

According to a statement attributed to the school's Students' Union Government, Taiwo experienced breathing difficulties while participating in a football game.

The students' account said he left the game after experiencing symptoms and later sought assistance when his condition worsened.

He was subsequently taken to the hospital's General Medical and Psychiatric Unit for treatment.

Students have alleged that there were delays in responding to the emergency and raised questions about the availability and use of oxygen and other emergency equipment.

Those allegations have not been independently established, and the precise medical circumstances surrounding Taiwo's death remain subject to investigation.

An eyewitness account reported by Fellow Nurses Africa also raised questions about the sequence of medical interventions, including allegations concerning oxygen equipment, medication and the initial declaration of death. Those claims remain allegations and require independent medical and administrative verification.

The controversy led to protests by students and increased tension within the institution.

Police and other authorities drawn into the controversy

The dispute has extended beyond the hospital's immediate community, with police reportedly becoming involved following the student protests.

According to reports based on the student union's account, healthcare personnel involved in the incident were questioned by police and subsequently released on bail.

The reported questioning does not establish criminal wrongdoing, and no finding of liability against any individual has been established.

The hospital has said that a fact-finding process is underway to determine what happened.

The institution's management also urged the public to allow the investigation to proceed without prejudice.

Hospital later revises academic suspension

Although the initial announcement stated that academic activities had been suspended indefinitely, subsequent developments indicate that the hospital later revised the directive.

A report published on October 23 said management issued another notice within 24 hours, allowing students in the 2025/2026 set to remain on campus while directing students in the 2026/2027 set to proceed on a one-week break.

Under the revised arrangement, students were required to write, sign and submit individual undertakings promising to maintain good conduct and discipline throughout their academic programme.

This means the initial indefinite suspension should be understood as the hospital's first response to the unrest rather than the latest position on the academic status of every student.

The hospital also announced that clinical services had resumed normally while an investigative committee examined the circumstances surrounding Taiwo's death.

Nurses' groups call for independent investigation

The incident has also attracted the attention of professional nursing organisations.

The Elegant Nurses Forum reportedly called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Taiwo's death and raised concerns about the treatment of students following the incident.

The group also alleged that Taiwo's death was the second reported death involving a nurse undergoing specialist training at the institution within approximately six months.

That claim has not been independently established and should not be treated as a confirmed institutional pattern without the findings of an appropriate investigation.

The forum called for relevant regulatory and government bodies to examine the clinical, administrative and institutional circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Among the issues raised were emergency preparedness, student welfare, complaint procedures and the protection of students' academic progress.

Questions remain over emergency response

The controversy has placed renewed attention on emergency medical response within healthcare institutions, particularly facilities responsible for training healthcare professionals.

Students and professional groups want investigators to establish the exact sequence of events from the moment Taiwo developed breathing difficulties to the time of his death.

Among the questions requiring answers are whether appropriate emergency treatment was administered promptly, whether essential equipment was functioning and available, and whether the medical response followed established clinical procedures.

The investigation will also need to establish the precise medical cause of death and determine whether any failures or shortcomings contributed to the outcome.

At this stage, allegations of negligence remain allegations. Neither the protests nor the hospital's decision to suspend academic activities constitutes proof that any healthcare worker or institution was responsible for Taiwo's death.

Hospital promises investigation

Hospital management has said it constituted an investigative committee to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The institution has also reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and accepted standards of healthcare delivery.

The investigation is therefore expected to provide a clearer account of what happened and address the concerns raised by students and other members of the nursing community.

For students, however, the incident has already had consequences beyond the loss of their colleague.

Academic activities were disrupted, hostel arrangements were affected and tensions emerged between students and management.

The subsequent revision of the suspension has provided some students with a route back to their academic programmes, but concerns surrounding the death remain.

Students await answers

The death of Godwin Ayodeji Taiwo has left his colleagues seeking answers while the hospital and other authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The initial indefinite suspension was presented by management as a measure intended to restore calm and create conditions for an investigation.

However, the subsequent revision of that decision shows that the institutional response has continued to evolve as discussions with students and other stakeholders progressed.

The central issue remains the circumstances of Taiwo's death.

A transparent and independent investigation could help establish the facts, determine whether any professional or administrative shortcomings occurred and identify measures needed to prevent similar incidents.

For the nursing students affected by the disruption, the outcome of that process will also be important for restoring confidence in their training environment.

For now, the hospital has resumed clinical operations while investigations continue, and the academic arrangements for affected students have been modified from the original indefinite suspension.
