Former Beşiktaş manager Sergen Yalcin has been appointed head coach of the Turkish national team on a four-year contract, replacing Vincenzo Montella.

Sergen Yalcin has officially been appointed the new head coach of the Türkiye national football team, marking the beginning of a new era for the Crescent Stars after the departure of Italian coach Vincenzo Montella.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, October 20, announcing that the 53-year-old Yalcin and his coaching staff will sign four-year contracts.

Yalcin takes charge after Montella was dismissed earlier this month following a difficult run of results in the UEFA Nations League and Türkiye's disappointing group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment represents Yalcin's first opportunity to manage Türkiye's senior national team.

Yalcin replaces Vincenzo Montella

Montella's three-year spell as Türkiye coach came to an end after a sharp decline in results.

The Italian coach initially enjoyed a successful period with the national team, including guiding Türkiye to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Under Montella, Türkiye also earned promotion to UEFA Nations League A for the first time.

However, the team struggled at the 2026 World Cup and failed to progress from the group stage.

The situation worsened during the Nations League campaign. Türkiye lost all four of its opening matches in Group A1, including defeats against Italy, France and Belgium, leaving the team at the bottom of the group.

Montella was subsequently dismissed, creating an opportunity for the federation to turn to a Turkish coach.

The TFF ultimately selected Yalcin, a former Türkiye international and one of the most recognizable figures in Turkish football.

Who is Sergen Yalcin?

Yalcin is deeply connected with Turkish football, particularly through his long association with Beşiktaş.

He began his professional career at Beşiktaş and became one of the club's most recognizable players. During his playing career, he also represented Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor.

According to the TFF, Yalcin became the first player to represent all four of Türkiye's major clubs.

His international career saw him earn 37 caps for Türkiye and score five goals between 1994 and 2003.

He represented the country at the 1996 and 2000 European Championships, giving him first-hand experience of international football before eventually moving into coaching.

His appointment now gives him the opportunity to lead the same national team he once represented as a player.

Successful spell at Beşiktaş

Yalcin's biggest achievement as a coach came during the 2020-21 season when he guided Beşiktaş to a domestic double.

The Istanbul club won both the Turkish Süper Lig and Turkish Cup under his leadership.

The league triumph was particularly significant because Yalcin became the first person in Beşiktaş's history to win the Turkish league title for the club both as a player and as a coach.

That success established him as one of the most prominent Turkish coaches of his generation.

Yalcin has also managed several other Turkish clubs, including Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor and Antalyaspor.

His most recent coaching position was another spell at Beşiktaş, which ended in May 2026.

A return to a Turkish coach

Yalcin's appointment is also significant because Türkiye has turned back to a domestic coach after successive spells under foreign managers.

He becomes the 48th head coach in the history of the Turkish national team and the 27th Turkish coach to hold the position.

Türkiye has previously relied on several high-profile domestic coaches, including Fatih Terim, Mustafa Denizli and Şenol Güneş.

Terim remains the country's record holder for matches managed, having overseen 135 games across four spells between 1990 and 2017. He also led Türkiye to the semi-finals of Euro 2008.

Güneş guided Türkiye to an historic third-place finish at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, while Denizli took the national team to the quarter-finals of Euro 2000.

Yalcin will now attempt to establish his own place among the country's most important national-team coaches.

A major rebuilding challenge awaits

The new coach inherits a team that needs to recover from a difficult period.

Türkiye's elimination from the 2026 World Cup at the group stage was followed by four consecutive Nations League defeats.

The results have left the team bottom of Group A1 and facing the possibility of relegation from the top tier of the Nations League.

Yalcin's immediate challenge will therefore be to restore confidence and improve results.

His familiarity with Turkish football could prove useful as he begins working with players from both the domestic league and Europe's major competitions.

Unlike a foreign coach arriving without an established relationship with Turkish football, Yalcin already understands the country's football culture, major clubs and national-team environment.

He also knows many of the pressures that come with managing one of Türkiye's biggest football institutions, having previously worked at Beşiktaş.

Türkiye's next chapter

The appointment gives Yalcin a long-term opportunity to build a national team around his own football philosophy.

The four-year contract means the federation is not treating the appointment simply as a short-term solution following Montella's departure.

Yalcin will have to develop a squad capable of competing at the highest level while managing the transition between established internationals and emerging Turkish talent.

His first major task will be to stop the team's slide in the Nations League and restore competitiveness.

The national team is scheduled to face Belgium and France in its remaining Nations League fixtures in November.

Those matches will provide Yalcin with an immediate test against strong opposition.

From Türkiye international to national-team coach

Yalcin's appointment completes a notable transition in his football career.

He once played for Türkiye at major international tournaments. More than two decades later, he will stand on the touchline responsible for preparing the national team for international competition.

His career has therefore come full circle.

The former attacking midfielder built his reputation as a talented player before establishing himself as a coach capable of winning major domestic trophies.

Now, he has been handed the biggest managerial responsibility of his career.

The TFF said it hopes the appointment will bring success to the national team and the country.

Whether Yalcin can translate his domestic success into international results will become one of the major storylines surrounding Turkish football over the coming years.

For now, his appointment officially begins a new chapter for Türkiye, with the federation placing its confidence in a coach who knows the country's football system from both sides of the touchline.
