Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving Portugal’s national team camp during the September international break.

The disciplinary decision follows Ronaldo’s unauthorized departure from the squad in Copenhagen on September 30, after a dispute with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.

The decision means the 41-year-old forward will be unavailable to represent Portugal during the November international window. However, the punishment does not necessarily bring an end to Ronaldo’s international career, with reports indicating that the Portuguese federation and coaching staff remain open to his return after the suspension.

Ronaldo punished after leaving Portugal camp

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp shortly before the team’s Nations League match against Denmark.

The incident followed growing tension between the veteran forward and new head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo had been an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway and had reportedly been unhappy with how his involvement in the match was handled.

Ronaldo later explained that he believed Jesus had failed to keep commitments made to him regarding his playing time.

After Jesus’ comments ahead of the Denmark fixture, Ronaldo decided to leave the national team camp after informing Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença of his decision. Reuters reported at the time that Ronaldo said he would later explain his reasons for leaving.

The Portuguese federation subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings against its captain.

Ronaldo admitted he was wrong to leave

Ronaldo later issued a public statement addressing the controversy.

While explaining his frustration with the circumstances surrounding his departure, the Portugal captain acknowledged that leaving the camp was not the appropriate way to handle the situation.

He apologized to his teammates and the Portuguese public and accepted that disciplinary consequences could follow.

Ronaldo also indicated that he remained committed to representing Portugal and was prepared to accept whatever punishment the federation considered appropriate. Reuters reported that he specifically acknowledged that his status as captain could be viewed as an aggravating factor.

That admission became significant during the subsequent disciplinary process.

FPF initially opened an urgent disciplinary case

Before the final 30-day punishment was announced, Ronaldo had already been placed under provisional suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation.

The FPF confirmed on October 10 that disciplinary proceedings had been opened against Ronaldo and that the case had been classified as urgent.

The federation initially imposed a non-automatic provisional suspension while the disciplinary investigation continued. Ronaldo was already subject to an automatic provisional suspension under the federation's regulations following his departure from the national-team camp.

At that stage, the potential punishment was considerably more severe.

Portuguese disciplinary regulations provide for a suspension of between one and six months, together with a financial penalty, for a player who abandons national-team duties without justification.

The final decision has now resulted in a 30-day suspension rather than the longer possible ban.

Why Ronaldo received a shorter suspension

Reports from Portuguese media and sports-law experts had suggested that Ronaldo's admission, apology and disciplinary record could work in his favour.

A legal analysis cited by A Bola indicated that provisions in the FPF disciplinary regulations could allow a sanction to be reduced when mitigating circumstances apply.

Ronaldo's public admission that he left the camp, his apology and his long service to the national team were among the factors identified as potentially relevant to the eventual punishment.

The final decision of 30 days therefore represents a substantially shorter punishment than the one-to-six-month range initially associated with the offense.

The €255 fine

In addition to the suspension, Ronaldo has been ordered to pay a €255 fine.

The financial penalty accompanies the 30-day prohibition on representing Portugal and forms part of the disciplinary punishment handed down by the FPF's disciplinary investigation process.

The amount is also significantly below the maximum financial penalties that had been discussed when the disciplinary case was first opened.

Earlier reports based on the FPF regulations indicated that a professional player could potentially face a fine of approximately €500 to €1,000 alongside a suspension of one to six months.

Ronaldo will miss Portugal's November international window

The immediate sporting consequence is that Ronaldo will not be available to represent Portugal during the November international break.

According to AS, the 30-day suspension prevents Ronaldo from appearing for Portugal during that window.

The timing is particularly notable because Portugal have already secured qualification for the quarter-finals of the Nations League, meaning Ronaldo's absence will come as the team prepares for the next stage of the competition.

The suspension, however, does not prevent Ronaldo from continuing to play club football for Al-Nassr.

His punishment relates specifically to his representation of the Portuguese national team.

Ronaldo's international future remains open

Although the disciplinary decision creates another difficult moment between Ronaldo and Portugal, it does not formally end his international career.

Ronaldo has repeatedly expressed his desire to continue representing Portugal.

In his statement following the camp controversy, he said he remained available for the national team after serving whatever punishment was imposed. Reuters reported that Ronaldo had made clear he still wanted to play for Portugal despite the disciplinary situation.

The FPF's position also appears to leave the door open.

AS reported that federation president Pedro Proença has been working toward easing the situation, while Jorge Jesus could also be willing to have Ronaldo back in the squad if circumstances allow.

That means the next step will depend partly on the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus and whether the forward is selected once his suspension expires.

The dispute began over Ronaldo's playing time

The incident did not emerge in isolation.

Tensions began after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal's match against Norway.

According to Ronaldo's subsequent explanation, he had been told he would receive playing time but ultimately remained on the bench despite warming up.

The situation contributed to frustration between the player and Jesus.

Ronaldo then left the squad before Portugal's match against Denmark, prompting the disciplinary proceedings.

Reuters reported that Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking his word on two occasions but nevertheless accepted responsibility for the manner in which he responded.

Jesus, meanwhile, had previously acknowledged tension surrounding Ronaldo's selection and playing time.

A major disciplinary moment for Portugal's captain

Ronaldo's punishment is significant because of his status within Portuguese football.

He is Portugal's most-capped men's international and its all-time leading scorer. Reuters reported that he had made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for the national team at the time of the disciplinary proceedings.

He has also captained Portugal through some of the most successful periods in the country's history, including the team's European Championship triumph and multiple Nations League campaigns.

His longevity means disciplinary action involving him inevitably attracts considerable attention.

However, the FPF's decision also demonstrates that Ronaldo remains subject to the same national-team disciplinary framework as other players, regardless of his status and achievements.

What happens after the suspension?

Ronaldo will now serve the 30-day suspension and miss Portugal's November international commitments.

After that period, his availability for future matches will depend on selection by Jorge Jesus and the wider relationship between the player, coach and federation.

The disciplinary decision itself does not state that Ronaldo has been permanently excluded from the national team.

Instead, the immediate consequence is a one-month ban from representing Portugal and the €255 financial penalty.

For Ronaldo, the focus will therefore shift from the disciplinary process to his relationship with Jesus and his ability to return to the national team setup.

The episode also provides another important chapter in the later stages of Ronaldo's international career. Despite being 41, he remains a major figure for Portugal, but the incident demonstrates that his position within the squad is now being managed alongside the decisions of a new head coach.

For now, the disciplinary case has been resolved with a 30-day suspension and €255 fine.

Ronaldo will miss Portugal's November international window, but the door remains open for him to return to the national team once his punishment has been completed and if he is selected again.
