Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman to claim football’s most prestigious individual prize since Michael Owen in 2001.
The Bayern Munich and England captain received the award at the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony at the London Palladium on October 26, making the achievement even more significant as the ceremony was held in London for the first time.
Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal. Manchester City/Barcelona midfielder Rodri placed fourth, while eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi finished fifth.
Kane Becomes Fifth English Ballon d’Or Winner
Kane's victory means England now has five different Ballon d’Or winners in the award's history.
The complete list is:
1. Stanley Matthews — 1956
2. Bobby Charlton — 1966
3. Kevin Keegan — 1978 and 1979
4. Michael Owen — 2001
5. Harry Kane — 2026
England Football and UEFA both confirm Kane as the fifth Englishman to win the award. Keegan remains the only English player to win it in consecutive years.
Kane therefore ended a 25-year wait for another English Ballon d’Or winner. Owen's triumph in 2001 came after an outstanding season with Liverpool, while Kane's achievement came after a record-breaking campaign for Bayern Munich and England.
73 Goals in a Historic Season
Kane's numbers were central to his victory.
The England captain scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country during the 2025/26 season, including 61 for Bayern Munich and 12 for England. He finished as Europe's leading scorer.
For Bayern, Kane scored 61 goals in 51 club matches according to Reuters, helping the German giants secure major domestic honours.
UEFA reports that Kane also scored 14 goals in the Champions League, where Bayern reached the semi-finals. He finished as the Bundesliga's leading scorer for the third consecutive season.
The season also delivered Kane three trophies with Bayern: the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
It was a significant change in Kane's career narrative. For years, the striker had been celebrated for his individual numbers while questions remained about his ability to win major team trophies. His move from Tottenham to Bayern in 2023 eventually brought him domestic silverware.
Kane Also Delivered for England
Kane's Ballon d’Or campaign was not built solely on his club performances.
At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the England captain scored six goals and led the Three Lions to a third-place finish. It was England's best World Cup result since their 1966 triumph.
The combination of his club production, international goals and leadership strengthened Kane's case during a particularly competitive Ballon d’Or race.
Mbappé had an outstanding campaign of his own, while Yamal helped Spain win the World Cup. Nevertheless, the voters ultimately placed Kane at the top of the men's ranking.
A London Ballon d’Or for Kane
The location of the ceremony added another layer to Kane's historic night.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony was moved outside France for the first time, with London selected to honour Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural Ballon d’Or winner in 1956.
Seventy years after Matthews became the first recipient, Kane became the fifth Englishman to lift the famous trophy.
Speaking after receiving the award, Kane admitted he was almost speechless and said winning it in London made the moment particularly special.
He thanked those who voted for him and paid tribute to the other nominees, while stressing the importance of determination and hard work.
From Loan Spells to Football's Biggest Individual Prize
Kane's route to the top of world football was far from straightforward.
As a young Tottenham player, he spent time on loan before establishing himself in the first team. Those spells included periods at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City.
He eventually returned to Tottenham and developed into one of the Premier League's most prolific strikers.
His game also extended beyond finishing. Kane became known for dropping deeper to create chances, linking midfield and attack and operating as a playmaker as well as a goalscorer.
That development helped transform him from a promising academy striker into England's all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most productive forwards of his generation.
His Ballon d’Or victory now adds the biggest individual honour in football to that career.
Kane Also Wins the Gerd Müller Trophy
The Ballon d’Or was not Kane's only individual recognition on the night.
He also won the Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to the outstanding men's striker of the year. It was his second time receiving the prize after sharing it with Mbappé in 2024.
His 73-goal season ultimately provided a remarkable statistical foundation for both awards.
Kane's victory also came in a year when several other major individual achievements were recognised. Yamal won the Men's Young Talent of the Year award, while Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón won the Yashin Trophy and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was named Men's Coach of the Year. Paris Saint-Germain won Men's Club of the Year.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or Top Five
The final top five in the men's Ballon d’Or were:
| Position | Player | Club |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Harry Kane | Bayern Munich |
| 2 | Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid |
| 3 | Lamine Yamal | Barcelona |
| 4 | Rodri | Manchester City/Barcelona |
| 5 | Lionel Messi | Inter Miami |
UEFA published the complete top-10 ranking, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sixth, Ousmane Dembélé seventh, Erling Haaland eighth, Michael Olise ninth and Fabián Ruiz tenth.
A New Chapter in England's Ballon d’Or History
Kane's achievement closes one of the longest gaps between English Ballon d’Or winners.
Matthews won the inaugural award in 1956, followed by Charlton in 1966. Keegan then became the only Englishman to win it twice, taking the honour in 1978 and 1979.
Owen's 2001 victory was England's most recent before Kane finally ended the wait a quarter of a century later.
Kane's victory also gives England another Ballon d’Or winner in an era dominated by players from Argentina, Portugal, France, Croatia, Brazil and other footballing nations.
For a player who spent years being judged primarily by goals and the absence of major trophies, the 2026 season provided the combination of individual production, team success and international achievement needed to reach the summit.
At 33, Kane is now officially a Ballon d’Or winner — and the first Englishman to do it in 25 years.
