The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has officially announced the appointment of Professor Princewill R. Chike as the institution's 10th Vice-Chancellor.
Transition Details
Professor Chike, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Health under Governor Nyesom Wike’s administration, was selected following a rigorous process conducted by the 17th Governing Council in compliance with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act.

Outgoing Leadership: Professor Chike will succeed the 9th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, whose tenure concludes on July 13, 2026.

Assumption of Office: Professor Chike is scheduled to formally assume his new role on July 13, 2026.

Final Ceremonies: Professor Georgewill is currently presiding over his final convocation ceremonies, held on June 5 and June 6, 2026.

In a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sam Kpenu, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, expressed confidence in the new Vice-Chancellor. Senator Ohuabunwa praised Professor Chike’s professional background and noted that the Council expects his leadership to foster visionary growth and continued development for the university.
