ABUJA — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has confirmed that the leadership of the red chamber is actively working to secure return tickets for incumbent senators who were unsuccessful in their recent party primaries for the 2027 general elections.
Addressing the High Number of Losses
During his remarks following the Senate's four-week recess, Akpabio expressed surprise at the significant number of incumbent lawmakers across the APC, PDP, NDC, and other parties who failed to secure their party’s nomination. It is estimated that approximately 40 senators have lost their bids for re-election so far.

Akpabio emphasized that the Senate leadership is committed to minimizing these losses, stating, "We have promised that we will have very few disappointments, and I do know that the Senate leader and the leadership of the Senate are working very hard towards that."
Stance on Security and National Tragedies
Beyond electoral matters, Akpabio addressed the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. He condemned the incident as an "assault on our collective humanity" and issued a strong warning to political actors against using national security crises for partisan gain or "cheap publicity."
He urged politicians and aspirants to support government-led security measures, emphasizing that the focus should remain on safeguarding schools, protecting communities, and ensuring that perpetrators face justice.
