WASHINGTON — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, has reaffirmed his commitment to resolving Nigeria’s security challenges through dialogue. During an engagement in Washington, the former Anambra State governor stated that if elected, he would prioritize the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and initiate negotiations with armed groups and agitators.
Focus on Dialogue over Detention
Obi argued that the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader is counterproductive. He contended that political and security disputes should be handled through engagement rather than punitive measures.
"I have said this repeatedly, there is no reason for detaining Mazi Nnamdi Kanu," Obi stated. "You cannot arrest somebody just because the person is speaking on radio. I am a politician, people have been calling me names. If I am in government today, I will discuss and engage with all agitators."
Broad Peace Strategy
The NDC candidate, who was recently ratified as the party's presidential flagbearer, indicated that his peace strategy extends beyond Kanu. He expressed readiness to negotiate with bandits and other armed groups as part of a broader framework to restore stability across the country.
Obi emphasized that opening channels of communication does not equate to an endorsement of illegal actions. Instead, he framed dialogue as a vital first step in addressing the root causes of grievances, suggesting that violence can be mitigated before more robust measures are considered.
