Nigerian singer Mayorkun has revealed that Afrobeats superstar Davido originally contributed a verse to his 2016 hit song “Love You Tire”, which eventually featured only Mayorkun and Mr Eazi.
Mayorkun made the revelation while discussing his early years in the Nigerian music industry and his relationship with Davido, who discovered him and signed him to Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).
According to the singer, Davido was initially expected to appear on “Love You Tire” and had already written a verse for the song. However, the planned collaboration did not happen because Davido was unable to make it onto the final recording.
Davido Was Originally Expected on the Song
Mayorkun said Davido's contribution to “Love You Tire” was not simply an idea that never materialised. The DMW boss had actually written a verse for the song before ultimately failing to record his part.
The song was eventually released in October 2016 with Ghanaian-Nigerian singer Mr Eazi as the featured artist. Official music listings identify “Love You Tire” as a Mayorkun and Mr Eazi collaboration, with the song released through Davido Music Worldwide.
Mayorkun's latest revelation provides new context to the history of the song, which became one of the early records that helped establish him following his breakout with “Eleko.”
‘Love You Tire’ Became an Early Mayorkun Hit
Released in 2016, “Love You Tire” followed the success of Mayorkun's debut single “Eleko,” which had quickly brought the then-new DMW artist significant attention.
The song featured Mr Eazi at a time when the singer was also rapidly gaining popularity across Nigeria and Ghana. Their collaboration was accompanied by an official music video directed by Clarence Peters.
Mr Eazi's appearance ultimately became an important part of the song's identity, with the two artists later performing “Love You Tire” together at Mayorkun's Mayor of Lagos concert in 2017.
Mayorkun Says Davido Never Publicly Claimed the Songwriting Contribution
Mayorkun also pointed out that Davido had never publicly told people that he had written a verse for him.
The revelation offers another glimpse into the working relationship between the two artists during Mayorkun's early DMW years.
Mayorkun joined DMW in 2016 after Davido discovered him online following his cover of Davido's “The Money.” He remained with the label until 2021, releasing several successful records during his time there.
The pair would later collaborate directly on songs including “Bobo” and “Betty Butter,” while Mayorkun also appeared alongside Davido on DMW projects.
A Different Story Behind a Familiar Record
The revelation has given fans another perspective on one of Mayorkun's earliest releases.
Although Davido's planned verse never appeared on the final version, “Love You Tire” went ahead with Mr Eazi and became part of the catalogue that helped establish Mayorkun as one of the notable new Nigerian artists of the mid-2010s.
The song remains officially credited to Mayorkun featuring Mr Eazi, meaning Davido does not appear as a featured artist on the released recording.
Mayorkun's account therefore sheds light on a version of the song that fans never got to hear and highlights the collaborative environment surrounding his early career at DMW.
