ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has declared his readiness to make the ultimate sacrifice for the country, emphasizing that genuine leadership requires unwavering commitment in the face of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
Obi made these remarks during a recent episode of the Black Box interview on the Nevon HQ podcast with journalist Rufai Oseni, which aired on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Responding to questions about how he would handle critical national security issues—including kidnapping and the targeting of security personnel—as Commander-in-Chief, Obi insisted on a centralized and decisive approach to governance.
"One government. It's either I'm in charge or they're in charge. One person must be in charge," Obi stated. "We declare war. If you're ready to lead, you must be ready to die. If you're not ready to die, go home."
The former Anambra State governor reflected on his past tenure, noting that his administration successfully confronted criminality by establishing firm control over the state’s security apparatus. He argued that the current crisis requires a similar level of resolve, asserting that the state cannot allow non-state actors to undermine its sovereignty.
During the interview, Obi also addressed broader questions regarding his loyalty to the country, reaffirming that he has no intention of holding any other citizenship. "I'm ready to die for Nigeria. It's one country. We cannot have non-state actors take over the state," he reiterated.
