ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially signaled a shift in his political strategy, pledging that his 2027 presidential campaign will be "driven by ideas, not insults."

The declaration comes in the wake of his successful emergence as the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Following a nationwide primary election held in late May 2026, Atiku secured the party's ticket, defeating challengers including former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

A Pledge for Meritocratic Governance

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku criticized the current political climate, noting that Nigerians have grown weary of empty promises and rhetoric.

"My campaign will be driven by ideas, not insults; by solutions, not slogans; and by competence, not propaganda," Atiku stated.

The ADC candidate emphasized a commitment to restoring merit-based governance. He pledged that a future administration under his leadership would focus on assembling a team of highly accomplished professionals and experienced technocrats, ensuring that key national decisions are grounded in expertise and the public interest rather than political patronage.

Defining the 2027 Vision

Atiku, who previously announced that the 2027 race would mark his final attempt at the presidency, has begun outlining a broad policy agenda. His platform focuses on critical sectors that he identifies as essential for Nigeria's recovery:

      •  Education & Youth: Pledging free, compulsory basic education and increased investment in skills and innovation for Nigerian youth.

      •  Economic Reform: Addressing the nation’s ongoing energy crisis, which he cited as the primary obstacle to industrialization, investment, and job creation.

      •  Public Service Reform: Prioritizing the recruitment of competence and the restoration of merit in every branch of the civil service.

As the race toward the 2027 general election intensifies, Atiku’s focus on a "solutions-based" campaign serves as a cornerstone of his effort to differentiate his platform from that of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
