LAGOS — In a move aimed at consolidating support within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Vice President and current ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, held a closed-door meeting with fellow aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen at his residence in Lagos on Sunday.
Fostering Party Unity
The meeting marks a significant step in the party’s reconciliation process following a contested presidential primary. Discontent had surfaced among several aspirants including former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen who had previously alleged irregularities and manipulation during the voting process.
Following the discussion, Atiku expressed optimism about the party’s path forward, emphasizing the need for a united front.
“Our discussions on the state of our nation and party were frank and productive. We resolved to work together in the challenging task of reclaiming and rebuilding our beloved country for the greater good of our people,” Atiku stated.
A Call for Cooperation
Atiku, who recently received the party’s flag as its official presidential candidate, has consistently appealed to his former rivals to set aside grievances. His outreach program has included direct appeals to key stakeholders, such as his recent visit to Rotimi Amaechi in Abuja.
By reaching out to Hayatu-Deen, the former Vice President is seeking to integrate influential figures into his campaign structure and prevent the formation of permanent factions within the ADC. He reaffirmed his readiness to provide leadership and work collaboratively with all aspirants to strengthen the party for the upcoming general election.
