LONDON — A United Kingdom court has remanded 32-year-old Maxwell Oguanaya in custody following his arrest in connection with the murder of 41 year-old Nigerian national Taiwo Ekerin. The development comes after a fatal altercation in the Lewisham area of southeast London late last month.

The Incident and Investigation

According to the Metropolitan Police, officers were dispatched to Lewisham High Street at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, following reports of a violent altercation. Upon arrival, they discovered Mr. Ekerin suffering from a severe head injury. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from the London Ambulance Service and being transported to a hospital, Mr. Ekerin succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, May 30.

Following an investigation, authorities arrested Maxwell Oguanaya, a resident of Eastfield Road in Enfield, on Thursday, June 4. He was formally charged with murder the following day. Oguanaya made an initial appearance at Ealing Magistrates’ Court on June 5, where he was remanded in custody. A second suspect, a 34 year-old man, was also arrested on suspicion of murder on June 5 and remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Family Appeal

In the wake of the tragedy, the victim’s family has spoken out about the circumstances of his death. Taiwo’s twin brother, Kehinde Ekerin, described the incident as an "unprovoked assault" that occurred while Taiwo was out for the evening.

The family has established a GoFundMe page to raise funds for funeral expenses, aiming to provide a dignified farewell for a man described by his brother as a "devoted father" and a "much-loved" friend. As of June 9, the community has rallied to support the family, raising over £3,700 toward their £10,000 target.

Judicial Proceedings

The legal process is ongoing, with Oguanaya scheduled for further court appearances this week to address the charges against him. Police have not yet released specific details regarding the motive or the full circumstances leading to the altercation, as the case remains an active investigation.
