IBADAN — Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has formally approached the Oyo State government with a proposal to deploy his private security outfit, Iru Ekun Private Security Limited, to safeguard public schools across the state.

The Proposal

In a letter dated June 9, 2026, and addressed to the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Igboho requested detailed information regarding the locations of all public schools within the state. The move is framed as a strategic partnership intended to mitigate the rising threat of insecurity, particularly following the abduction of pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area last month.

Key components of the proposed security arrangement include:

Strategic Deployment: The stationing of at least two trained security personnel at every identified public school.
Operational Mandate: The primary duties of the personnel would be to monitor access points, secure school perimeters, and coordinate with school administrators and local community vigilantes.
Infrastructure Advice: The network has recommended that the state government undertake the fencing of all public schools to enhance the effectiveness of the proposed security personnel.

Context of the Insecurity Crisis

The proposal follows a series of violent incidents on May 15, 2026, when gunmen targeted several institutions, including the Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota and the Community Grammar School in Esiele. These attacks resulted in the mass abduction of students and staff, sparking widespread outrage and intensifying pressure on the state government to fortify educational facilities.

In the correspondence, signed by Igboho and the outfit’s legal adviser, Junaid Sanusi, the organization emphasized that "time is of the essence." The group stated that it intends to collaborate with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and other relevant stakeholders to restore a sense of safety within the public education sector.

Government Stance

The Oyo State government has not yet issued a formal response to the proposal. Historically, the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasized the importance of working through established security channels, such as the Amotekun Corps and federal agencies. It remains to be seen whether the state will authorize the integration of a non-state private security network into the public school system.
