OSOGBO, Nigeria — The Osun State Police Command has launched an intensive investigation and manhunt after suspected gunmen shot the Accord Party Chairman for Osogbo Local Government, Asimiyu Ajibola(also known as Baba Isila), on Wednesday night, June 3, 2026.
The Incident
The attack occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. in the MDS area of Osogbo. According to reports, Ajibola was traveling in a blue Toyota Corolla with associates when armed men on a motorcycle intercepted their vehicle and opened fire.
Escape and Rescue: The occupants of the vehicle managed to drive to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters to seek refuge, forcing the assailants to retreat. Ajibola was subsequently rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH), where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Current Status: While initial reports indicated he was in critical condition, latest updates from medical personnel suggest he is currently in a stable condition and responding to treatment.
Police and Government Response
The Osun State Police Command has treated the incident as an attempted assassination.
Investigation: Police spokesperson SP Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a high-level investigation. Forensic teams have processed the scene and recovered exhibits to aid in identifying the perpetrators.
Government Condemnation: The Osun State Government, through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, has condemned the attack. The government urged security agencies to conduct a professional, thorough investigation, noting that the attack possesses "elements of political colourations."
Public Reaction: The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, including from public figures like Afrobeats star David Adeleke (Davido), who called for political differences to be settled through the ballot box rather than violence, citing the upcoming political climate in the state.
