IBADAN — The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially cancelled all elaborate celebrations previously scheduled to mark its third anniversary. The leadership of the legislature cited the prevailing security challenges across the state, particularly in the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso axis, as the primary reason for the decision.

Solidarity Over Celebration

During the plenary session on Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, stated that the Assembly chose to forgo festivities to show solidarity with residents currently affected by insecurity.

"The occasion would ordinarily have been marked with celebrations and public engagements, but members resolved to focus attention on governance, legislative responsibilities, and efforts geared towards addressing the security situation," Ogundoyin explained.

Three Years of Legislative Activity

Rather than hosting celebratory events, the Assembly utilized the occasion to provide a formal report on its legislative impact over the past three years. According to Speaker Ogundoyin, the Assembly has achieved the following:

  • Legislation: 36 bills have been passed into law across various sectors.

  • Resolutions: 276 resolutions were passed and transmitted to the executive arm for implementation.

  • Public Engagement: Nine public hearings were held to involve stakeholders and civil society in the law-making process.

  • Oversight: The Post Legislative Scrutiny (PLS) Unit has actively monitored the implementation of key laws, specifically the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law (2019) and the Oyo State Security Agency Law (2020).

Focus on Security

A significant focus of the legislature during this period has been the intervention in the state's security landscape. The Speaker highlighted that the Assembly convened a dedicated security summit to address the recurring threats in the region.

"The Assembly remains focused on delivering democratic dividends and supporting policies that promote peace, security, and socio-economic development," Ogundoyin stated. He reaffirmed that the legislature is working in close collaboration with the executive branch and security agencies to tackle emerging threats, ensuring that the welfare of Oyo State citizens remains the top priority.
