ABUJA — The Nigeria Police Force has successfully dismantled a notorious “one-chance” robbery and kidnapping syndicate that has long terrorized commuters within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The operation, led by the Force Intelligence Department–Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS), marks a significant victory in the ongoing campaign against violent street crime in the nation's capital.

An 18-Month Intelligence Operation 

The breakthrough followed an exhaustive 18-month, intelligence-led investigation that began in 2025 following a surge in reports from victims. According to police reports, the syndicate operated by masquerading as commercial taxi drivers, picking up unsuspecting passengers predominantly women and subsequently robbing them at gunpoint.

In a detailed briefing, the Force revealed that the gang was linked to the deaths of two nurses in separate incidents between January and February 2026. The syndicate’s modus operandi involved blindfolding, beating, and robbing victims of their valuables, often forcing them to disclose banking details or using their devices to secure fraudulent loans via mobile applications.

Police Strategy and Arrests 

The operation culminated on June 2, 2026, when the gang’s prime suspect was taken into custody after a sustained surveillance effort. Police officials noted that the gang leader frequently relocated to evade capture and actively recruited new members to replace those previously apprehended. Among the arrested is David Francis, who joined the syndicate in March 2026 and reportedly confessed to assisting in robberies and the illicit withdrawal of stolen funds.

The Force Intelligence Department emphasized that the group had been under close watch since a major robbery incident in January 2025, which saw the theft of approximately ₦11 million.

While celebrating the takedown of this organized network, the Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety. Authorities have urged FCT residents to exercise extreme caution when commuting, specifically advising:

  • Avoid boarding vehicles with unknown passengers, especially during late-afternoon and evening hours.

  • Utilize verified ride-hailing platforms for transportation.

  • Share live travel details with trusted family or friends.

  • Trust your instincts and report any suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station immediately.
