KATSINA — The Defence Headquarters’ Joint Task Force (JTF) North West, under Operation Fansan Yamma, has launched a decisive military offensive codenamed "Operation Clean Sweep III" in Katsina State. The operation, which commenced on June 14, 2026, aims to flush out criminal elements in the Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding regions following the abduction and subsequent death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar.

Targeting Criminal Enclaves

The late Major General was kidnapped alongside his wife by suspected terrorists, an act that has prompted an intensified crackdown by the military. Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Media Information Officer for JTF North West, confirmed that the operation is focused on neutralizing the perpetrators, dismantling logistical networks, and securing the affected communities.

Since its initiation, the JTF has executed:

  • Aggressive Fighting Patrols: Targeted sweeps of high-risk areas.

  • Intelligence-Led Raids: Precision strikes on suspected criminal hideouts.

  • Clearance Missions: Operations across Dikkawa Hills, Adua, Nasarawa, and Karaduwa, resulting in the destruction of terrorist bases and life-support structures.

The military reported significant successes in these initial engagements, noting that the destruction of these hideouts has substantially weakened the operational capacity of the bandits in the region.

Community Impact and Ongoing Efforts

The late Major General Rabe Abubakar was laid to rest on Sunday, June 14, at the Gidan Dawa Cemetery in the Katsina metropolis, with the funeral attended by a large contingent of mourners and community members.

In its statement, the Theatre Command emphasized that the mission is being conducted in close collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders. The military has issued a strong reassurance to the residents of Matazu, vowing to maintain persistent pressure on criminal elements until full stability is restored.

The JTF North West has urged the public to act as "eyes and ears" for security forces. Residents have been encouraged to share credible, timely information regarding the movement or activities of suspected bandits. The military has guaranteed that all provided intelligence will be handled with strict confidentiality.
