A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has ordered the remand of the Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Grace Ogunleye, following her arraignment over allegations of staging her own kidnapping. The Ekiti State Police Command brought the official and three other co-defendants before Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun to face charges of conspiracy and self-kidnapping. This development marks a dramatic turn in a case that had initially triggered significant public anxiety and a large-scale security search across the state.
The arraignment followed an intensive police investigation into the events of May 20, 2026, when Ogunleye was reported missing. At the time, her vehicle was discovered abandoned along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti Road, and her mobile phone was unreachable, leading residents and local government authorities to fear she had been abducted by armed criminals. The reported incident prompted a swift, coordinated response from the military, police, and local security operatives, who engaged in extensive search efforts under the impression that the council official was in grave danger.
During the court session, the prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, informed the court that the case file had been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. Consequently, the prosecution requested that the court remand the suspects while the legal review is ongoing. Chief Magistrate Adeosun granted the application, ordering that Ogunleye and her three co-defendants be held at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre until the next phase of the judicial proceedings.
