BENIN CITY — The Edo State Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the May 9, 2026, abduction of three women from Iyowa Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area. Following intensive rescue operations and aerial surveillance, police have arrested a key suspect and recovered two decomposing bodies from a forest in Ogwa Community.
The Abduction and Ordeal
The victims Mrs. Favour Nosakhare (66), Mrs. Annabel Osasere (28), and Miss Rejoice Otikpere (26) were abducted from their residence by armed kidnappers and taken into the nearby forest. The case gained national attention after the kidnappers contacted the victims’ families via video call, showing the women being subjected to torture.
Police Operation and Arrest
Operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), supported by the Police Drone Unit, launched a coordinated rescue effort across criminal hideouts in Ovia North-East.
The Gun Duel: On May 19, police located the gang near a powerline corridor deep within the forest. A fierce gun battle ensued, during which the police overwhelmed the kidnappers. The suspects managed to flee the scene, but left behind a blood-soaked jacket and spent AK-47 ammunition.
The Suspect: Investigation led to the arrest of Musa Haruna (23), who was apprehended while seeking treatment for gunshot wounds. Police identified him as a member of a syndicate notorious for kidnapping and armed robbery along the Benin-Lagos and Old Benin-Akure road corridors.
Recovery of Remains: Following his confession, the suspect led investigators to a forest in Ogwa Community. On June 2, 2026, police recovered two decomposing bodies. The family of Mrs. Favour Nosakhare has since identified one of the bodies as that of their relative.
Ongoing Manhunt
The police have intensified tactical and intelligence-driven operations to track down the remaining members of the syndicate. The Command expressed confidence that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as the manhunt continues across the region.
