ABUJA — Raising fresh alarms over the cyber vulnerabilities of critical national infrastructure, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has officially alerted the public to an unauthorized breach of its official digital platform by suspected hackers.
The agency, which is statutorily responsible for disaster management and emergency response across Nigeria, disclosed the security compromise in an official public notice published via its verified X handle on Friday. NEMA's tech team has initiated emergency defensive protocols, but the incident has highlighted systemic cybersecurity gaps within government institutional portals.
The Takedown: Automatic Redirects to Betting Platforms
Independent digital checks verified that the agency’s domain infrastructure had been heavily compromised. Users attempting to access the official emergency homepage are being automatically hijacked and redirected away from NEMA’s portal to third-party commercial and promotional gambling platforms.
Among the malicious redirects are prominent online gambling companies and sports betting networks, including Stake and 1XBet, where users wager real money on live sporting events. Additionally, parts of the hijacked web directory have been flooded with unauthorized advertisements promoting commercial anti-aging creams and independent online gaming content.
The cyber-attack appears to be a continuation of long-standing structural vulnerabilities. Earlier investigative deep-dives had revealed that the agency failed to address a previous page hijacking incident where external actors unauthorizedly published commercial gaming assets. The current attack marks an escalation in the technical manipulation of the agency's primary web domain.
NEMA’s Countermeasures and Data Warnings
In its official statement, NEMA confirmed that its specialized technical departments are actively working to isolate the malicious scripts, clean the compromised directories, and rebuild the security architecture of the network.
“The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been alerted to an unauthorized breach of its official website by suspected hackers,” the agency’s official statement read. “The Agency is currently taking necessary technical measures to rectify the breach, secure the platform, and restore normal operations.”
⚠️ Urgent Public Advisory: Because the hackers have full control over the display interface and redirect paths, NEMA has issued an urgent warning to citizens, corporate bodies, and international partners to completely avoid interacting with the portal until a total system recovery is announced.
“In the meantime, the general public is strongly advised to disregard any suspicious content, misleading information, unauthorized announcements, or fraudulent solicitations for money that may appear on the compromised website or be circulated through related channels,” the management cautioned.
The agency expressed its deepest regrets over any operational disruptions and inconveniences caused to the public by the digital blackout. However, the agency's communication desks did not provide deep technical specifics regarding the exact vector of the security breach, nor did they clarify whether sensitive emergency databases, institutional logistics plans, or internal employee data registries had been accessed or stolen during the infiltration.
