KATSINA — A notorious bandit kingpin, identified as Kachallah Muhammad, has opened a direct line of communication with the family of abducted retired Major General Rabe Abubakar Batsari and his wife. The couple was kidnapped on Saturday, May 30, 2026, while traveling along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Demands for Release
In a departure from the conventional ransom demands often associated with kidnappings in the region, the bandit leader has explicitly demanded a prisoner exchange.
The Condition: Kachallah Muhammad is insisting on the immediate release of his relatives currently held by Nigerian security authorities in exchange for the couple’s freedom.
Status of Abductees: During the communication facilitated on Monday, June 1, 2026, the retired General was allowed to speak briefly with a local government official. He confirmed that both he and his wife are "hale and hearty" and are being adequately cared for by their captors.

The Ambush: Reports indicate that gunmen emerged from hiding, blocked the road, and opened fire on the vehicle. The couple’s driver managed to escape the scene despite sustaining a gunshot wound, but the General and his wife were whisked away into the nearby forest.
