MEXICO CITY — South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed deep disappointment following his team's 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match on Thursday. Beyond the scoreline, the goalkeeper voiced concern over what he perceived as a lack of continental solidarity from African football fans.
Williams Appeals for Support
In post-match comments, Williams noted his surprise at the volume of support Mexico received from fellow African fans in attendance, suggesting that African nations should stand together during global tournaments.
“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different,” Williams said. “Many Africans supported Mexico, not us. We almost shed tears; it’s truly sad. As Africans, let’s stand for each other.”
The Context of the Controversy
The goalkeeper’s appeal has sparked a polarized debate on social media. While some supporters empathized with his desire for continental unity, many fans from across Africa including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe responded with a contrasting perspective.
Critics pointed to recurring reports of xenophobic violence against African migrants in South Africa as a primary factor damaging the sense of solidarity. The defeat leaves South Africa at the bottom of Group A after the opening round.
