Nigerian-American racing prodigy Ugo Ugochukwu has been crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Champion after finishing second in the final race of the season at the Madring circuit in Madrid, Spain.
The 19-year-old Campos Racing driver secured the championship on Sunday, September 13, after a dramatic season-long battle with British driver Freddie Slater. Ugochukwu entered the final round with the title still undecided but produced the result he needed in the Feature Race to claim the championship.
His runner-up finish behind Finland’s Tuukka Taponen was enough to secure the title, with Slater finishing eighth. Ugochukwu ultimately ended the season 14 points ahead of Slater.
The achievement makes Ugochukwu the first American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship in its current format, adding his name to a list of drivers who have used the series as a pathway toward Formula 2 and Formula 1.
Ugochukwu Holds His Nerve in Madrid
The championship came down to the final race of the season, with Ugochukwu and Slater separated by a narrow margin heading into the Madrid finale.
Ugochukwu had taken the championship lead during Saturday's action after finishing fourth in the opening Feature Race at the new Madring circuit. He entered Sunday's final Feature Race knowing that a strong result could be enough to secure the title.
He delivered exactly that.
Starting behind Taponen, Ugochukwu maintained his position and crossed the finish line second. Taponen controlled the race from pole position to claim his maiden FIA Formula 3 victory, but the biggest celebration belonged to Ugochukwu, whose second-place finish confirmed him as champion.
Slater, who had been one of the leading drivers throughout the campaign, could only finish eighth. That result allowed Ugochukwu to pull clear at the top of the standings.
The final margin was 14 points.
A Historic Championship for Ugochukwu
Ugochukwu's achievement carries particular significance because he became the first driver representing the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 title.

The FIA records that he won several karting championships before moving into single-seater racing. He entered British Formula 4 in 2022 and finished third overall before moving into Italian F4 in 2023.

He finished second in the Italian F4 Championship, won the Euro 4 Championship and finished third in the UAE F4 Championship. He subsequently moved into Formula Regional competition in 2024 before stepping up to FIA Formula 3 in 2025.
One of the highlights of his 2024 season came at the Macau Grand Prix, where he took victory.
His development also attracted attention from McLaren, and he became a member of the McLaren Driver Development programme during his junior career.
The 2026 season, however, represented the biggest breakthrough of his career so far.
Strong Start Set the Foundation
Ugochukwu began the 2026 FIA Formula 3 campaign with an impressive performance in Australia.
He secured his first Feature Race victory in the opening round, immediately establishing himself as one of the drivers capable of challenging for the championship.
As the season progressed, consistency became one of his biggest strengths.
According to the FIA and motorsport reports, Ugochukwu continued to collect strong results while avoiding the kind of major setbacks that can destroy a championship campaign. He recorded podium finishes at several venues, including Silverstone, Catalonia, the Red Bull Ring and Hungary.

Slater had been particularly strong during the first part of the season, finishing six of the first seven Feature Races on the podium before the summer break. The Spanish team secured the FIA Formula 3 Teams' Championship alongside Ugochukwu's Drivers' Championship, completing a highly successful campaign.

The success was particularly significant because Ugochukwu delivered the team's first drivers' title in the FIA Formula 3 category.

Formula 3 is widely regarded as one of the important stages in the development of young drivers hoping to reach Formula 1.
Drivers typically progress from karting through junior single-seater categories before moving into Formula 3, Formula 2 and, ultimately, Formula 1.

Ugochukwu's championship therefore strengthens his credentials as he continues his progression through the single-seater ladder.
