LONDON — Defender Harry Maguire has confirmed he will not be part of England's squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America, revealing he has been left "shocked and gutted" by manager Thomas Tuchel’s decision.

The veteran center-back, who holds 66 caps and has been a fixture of England’s tournament runs since 2018, was omitted as Tuchel finalized his 26-man roster. The German tactician began contacting players directly on Thursday ahead of Friday morning's official announcement at Wembley, introducing massive changes to the team's core setup.

Maguire Voices Dismay Over Omission

Maguire took to Instagram to share his disappointment, indicating that his form at club level had given him confidence that he would play a significant role for the national team this summer.

“I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” Maguire wrote. “I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer.”

The center-back had missed out on Euro 2024 due to a calf injury but returned to the international stage in March, featuring in both friendly matches under Tuchel. Despite starting regularly for Manchester United this term, he was ultimately overlooked in favor of other defensive profiles, including Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa, and Dan Burn. His United teammate, fullback Luke Shaw, has also reportedly been left out of the traveling party.

Tactical Shifts Reshape the Roster

The omission of Maguire is part of a broader, uncompromising approach by Tuchel as he configures England's tactical structure for the tournament. Reports have surfaced that Manchester City's Phil Foden and Chelsea's Cole Palmer have also missed the cut following quiet club campaigns disrupted by minor injuries. Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is another notable absentee from the final squad list.

Explaining his selection principles at a Friday morning press conference, Tuchel emphasized that his priority was building a cohesive, unselfish group rather than simply collecting individual talent.

“From day one we were clear we were trying to build the best possible team, which is not necessarily the 26 most talented players,” Tuchel stated. “Teams win championships. We have specialists for different scenarios when we're leading, when we're chasing a result.”

While several established names stay home, the squad benefits from the inclusion of forward Ivan Toney, who earned a recall following a productive goalscoring season with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. Ollie Watkins also returns to provide central cover for captain Harry Kane.

England will begin their World Cup campaign in Group L against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, followed by group-stage fixtures against Ghana and Panama.
