FIFA has officially unveiled a significant change to the pre-match ceremony format for the 2026 World Cup, moving away from the long-standing tradition of teams lining up in parallel rows.

The New Format

Under the revised code of conduct for the tournament, starting line-ups and substitutes will no longer stand in separate lines. Instead, the new procedure will include all players named in a matchday squad, creating a more inclusive experience for the entire team.

      •  Team Assembly: Both teams, including all substitutes, will form circles within their respective halves of the pitch.

      •  National Anthems: During the playing of the national anthems, the players and referees will face one another.

      •  National Flag Displays: Large national flag banners will be displayed across each half of the field to enhance the visual spectacle.

      •  Player Entrance: All players will walk onto the pitch through a dedicated arch, accompanied by youth escorts.

FIFA's Vision

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the initiative is designed to celebrate the collective effort of the tournament. "The FIFA World Cup is about every player and every fan," Infantino said. "This new pre-match ceremony reflects that... creating a moment of unity, pride, and emotion."

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which features an expanded 48-team format, is set to kick off on June 11, 2026, and will run through July 19.
