Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after the federation opened disciplinary proceedings over his departure from Portugal’s national team camp.
The 41-year-old captain must now wait for the conclusion of the disciplinary process and the final decision on whether he will receive an additional punishment. The FPF classified the case as urgent and imposed a non-automatic preventive suspension on Ronaldo.
The decision follows Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo subsequently apologised publicly for leaving the camp and said he was prepared to accept the consequences of his actions.
FPF Opens Formal Disciplinary Proceedings
The FPF's disciplinary body decided on October 9 to open proceedings against Ronaldo to determine whether the events reported on October 7 had disciplinary implications.
In its official statement, the federation said the player had been subject to an automatic preventive suspension before the disciplinary case was formally opened. It then imposed a further non-automatic preventive suspension and designated the proceedings as urgent.
The case was subsequently forwarded to the FPF's Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10. The federation said the proceedings would remain confidential until the investigation is completed.
This means Ronaldo has not yet received a final disciplinary punishment. The current suspension is a provisional measure while the federation examines the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Ronaldo Had Already Accepted Responsibility
Ronaldo addressed the incident publicly before the federation announced its disciplinary decision.
The Portugal captain apologised for leaving the national team's camp and acknowledged that his position as captain made the situation more serious. He said he believed actions should have consequences and indicated that he was willing to accept whatever punishment was imposed.
Ronaldo also disputed aspects of the circumstances that led to his departure, explaining that he believed an agreement with Jesus over his playing time had been changed. According to Ronaldo, he had expected to miss the Norway and Denmark matches as part of a plan to manage his fitness, but was subsequently told he would play against Norway.
The disagreement intensified after Ronaldo was left on the bench against Norway and was not brought into the game despite warming up.
Dispute With Jorge Jesus Behind Camp Exit
The disciplinary case stems from Ronaldo's decision to leave Portugal's camp in Copenhagen ahead of the team's Nations League match against Denmark.
Reports say the disagreement centred on Ronaldo's expectations regarding his role in the team and conversations he had with Jesus.
Ronaldo later criticised the coach's handling of the situation while taking responsibility for his decision to leave the camp.
Jesus, meanwhile, has denied that there was a formal agreement guaranteeing Ronaldo playing time. Despite the dispute, the Portugal coach has indicated that Ronaldo could potentially return to the national team once the disciplinary matter is resolved.
Possible Punishment Still to Be Decided
The provisional suspension does not represent the final outcome of the case.
Under the FPF's disciplinary regulations, players who leave a national-team activity without justification can face a suspension and financial penalty. Reports citing the regulations say the potential suspension can range from one to six months, with professional players potentially facing a fine of between €500 and €1,000.
However, no final punishment has been announced against Ronaldo.
The disciplinary committee must first complete its investigation before determining whether Ronaldo committed a punishable offence and, if so, what sanction should apply.
Portugal Still Wants Ronaldo Back
Despite the disciplinary proceedings, Portugal's football authorities have indicated that they want Ronaldo to remain part of the national team.
FPF president Pedro Proença said that the federation, coaching staff and players all want Ronaldo back, although the disciplinary decision will be made independently by the relevant committee.
The situation therefore remains separate from Ronaldo's long-term position with Portugal. His provisional suspension prevents him from participating while the case is being processed, but it does not by itself mean that he has been removed permanently from the national team.
Ronaldo remains Portugal's captain and one of the most important players in the country's football history.
Ronaldo Awaits Final Verdict
The case now moves into the formal investigation stage, with the FPF's Disciplinary Investigation Committee examining the reported events.
Until that process is completed, Ronaldo remains provisionally suspended. The federation has not announced when the final decision will be issued.
For now, Ronaldo's own public acceptance of responsibility has been followed by formal disciplinary action from Portuguese football authorities. The final verdict will determine whether the current suspension is followed by a longer sanction or whether the case results in a different outcome.
