HOUSTON — Brazil secured their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan in the Round of 32 at Houston Stadium on Monday. Gabriel Martinelli struck a decisive goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to break Japanese hearts and extend Brazil’s quest for a sixth world title.
The match began with Brazil dominating possession, but it was Japan who struck first. In the 29th minute, midfielder Kaishū Sano intercepted a misplaced pass at midfield, drove toward the Brazilian goal, and fired a clinical right-footed shot into the bottom corner. Despite Brazil’s heavy pressure, Japan maintained their defensive discipline, entering the half-time break with a narrow 1-0 advantage.

Brazil emerged for the second half with renewed intensity, bolstered by the introduction of substitute Endrick. The pressure finally yielded results in the 56th minute when Casemiro powered home a thumping header from an inch-perfect delivery by Gabriel Magalhães, leveling the score. Brazil continued to hunt for a winner, with Vinícius Júnior coming agonizingly close when his effort deflected off the post following a brilliant individual run.
Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, the breakthrough arrived in the 95th minute. Bruno Guimarães found Gabriel Martinelli in space on the far side of the box, and Martinelli’s curling effort clipped the post on its way into the net, igniting celebrations among the Brazilian contingent in Houston.

The victory marks Brazil's 12th win in 15 competitive meetings against Japan.
