Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal continued her impressive return to the WTA Tour with a straight-sets victory over China’s Wang Xinyu at the China Open, while Alexander Zverev booked a quarter-final meeting with Novak Djokovic in Beijing.

Kartal, 24, defeated 31st seed Wang 6-3, 6-2 in her second competitive match since spending six months out with a back injury. The British player produced a composed performance against the home favourite to move into the last 32 of the tournament.

Her return to action has already produced encouraging results, with Kartal showing little sign of rust despite her lengthy absence from the tour.

Kartal takes advantage of Rybakina upset

Kartal had been expected to face newly crowned world number one Elena Rybakina in the next round.

However, those plans changed dramatically when Rybakina suffered a shock defeat to world number 118 Alina Charaeva.

Rybakina, competing in her first tournament since winning the US Open and moving to the top of the WTA rankings, won the opening set 6-3 before Charaeva fought back to claim the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.

The result means Kartal will instead face Charaeva for a place in the next round.

For Charaeva, the victory represented one of the biggest results of her career. The Armenian had never previously faced a top-20 opponent on the WTA Tour before taking on Rybakina.

Kartal will now look to take advantage of the opportunity and continue what has been an impressive comeback.

Zverev books Djokovic quarter-final

On the men's side, Alexander Zverev advanced to the China Open quarter-finals with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory over China's Juncheng Shang.

The German top seed needed just 55 minutes to complete the win, hitting nine aces and not facing a single break point. He converted four of five break opportunities against Shang to progress comfortably.

Zverev's reward is a high-profile quarter-final against six-time China Open champion Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian has never lost a match at the Beijing tournament and enters the contest with a perfect 31-0 record there.

Djokovic also maintained his unbeaten record earlier in the tournament, defeating China's Bu Yunchaokete after returning to the event following an 11-year absence. His victory over Nuno Borges had already extended his China Open record to 30-0.

The meeting with Zverev therefore represents a major test for both players.

Zverev chasing world number one ranking

The quarter-final comes during an important period in Zverev's career.

The 29-year-old has never reached the top of the men's world rankings, but he has a route to number one if he can produce a strong run in Beijing and Shanghai.

His chances have been strengthened by Jannik Sinner's decision to withdraw from next week's Shanghai Masters. Sinner, who currently occupies the number-one position, is recovering from a knee injury and has not played since losing to Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July.

Zverev has already enjoyed a remarkable 2026 season, winning his first two Grand Slam titles at the French Open and US Open.

But before he can seriously think about taking over the world number-one ranking, he faces one of the most difficult possible opponents in Beijing.

Djokovic has won six China Open titles and remains unbeaten at the tournament. Zverev will therefore need to maintain the level that carried him past Shang if he is to end the Serbian's remarkable record in the Chinese capital.

Dart exits after promising start

Another British player, Harriet Dart, was unable to join Kartal in the next round.

The 30-year-old qualifier made a strong start against American 10th seed Iva Jovic, taking the opening set after breaking her opponent's serve three times.

Jovic, however, responded strongly and eventually recovered to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The result ended Dart's run but represented another valuable experience for the British player against one of the rising names on the women's tour.

Alcaraz advances in Tokyo

Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz continued his comeback at the Japan Open in Tokyo by reaching the quarter-finals.

The Spaniard was pushed hard by Italy's Matteo Arnaldi in the opening set, saving four set points before winning the tie-break 8-6. He then dominated the second set to complete a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory.

Alcaraz will face Canada's Denis Shapovalov in the quarter-finals after Shapovalov defeated Chile's Alejandro Tabilo 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

With the China Open and Japan Open both reaching their latter stages, attention will now turn to the major quarter-final contests — particularly the meeting between Djokovic and Zverev in Beijing.

For Kartal, meanwhile, the focus is firmly on continuing her encouraging comeback after six months away from competitive tennis.
