GLASGOW — The Scotland national team has been dealt a significant blow ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following confirmation that influential midfielder Billy Gilmour has been ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury. In a surprise move, head coach Steve Clarke has called up 19-year-old Manchester United midfielder Tyler Fletcher to take his place in the squad.
The Injury Blow
The injury occurred during Scotland’s 4-1 friendly victory over Curaçao at Hampden Park on Saturday, May 30.Gilmour went down unchallenged during the first half and was visibly distressed as he left the field.Subsequent medical scans confirmed damage to his knee, effectively ending his World Cup aspirations. The Napoli midfielder will now return to his club to begin his rehabilitation process.
Tyler Fletcher’s Surprise Call-Up
Despite not being on the initial standby list, Tyler Fletcher the son of former Scotland captain and Manchester United legend Darren Fletcher has been thrust into the spotlight. The teenager, who has been training with the senior squad, made his international debut as a substitute during the Curaçao match, a performance that evidently impressed Steve Clarke.
In selecting Fletcher, Clarke opted for the young midfielder over more established reserve options, including Connor Barron (Rangers), Lennon Miller (Udinese), and Andy Irving (Sparta Prague).
"I had to disappoint another three players this morning again, to tell them that they had missed out," Clarke stated. "I just felt Tyler came into the squad this week and showed up really well, did well in the game, so that was the thinking behind that one."
Looking Ahead
The Scottish squad departed for their Florida training camp on Sunday, May 31. They are scheduled to play a final warm-up friendly against Bolivia on June 6 before kicking off their historic World Cup campaign their first in 28 years against Haiti in Boston on June 14.
