Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for his altercation with Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal during Saturday's LaLiga clash.

The RFEF Disciplinary Committee classified Bernal's actions as an aggression, after the Uruguayan midfielder was sent off for grabbing Yamal by the neck and headbutting him twice while the ball was out of play.

The incident occurred in the 54th minute of Betis' 5-2 defeat to Barcelona at La Cartuja, shortly after Betis had equalised to make the score 2-2. Bernal was shown a straight red card following the confrontation, leaving Manuel Pellegrini's side with 10 men.

Referee's report detailed the incident

Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea's match report described the incident in strong terms.

According to the report, Bernal was dismissed because he grabbed an opponent by the neck and delivered two consecutive headbutts to his face while the ball was not in play. The report also stated that Yamal did not require medical treatment and was able to continue the match.

Yamal was also shown a yellow card for his involvement in the confrontation. The Barcelona winger had pushed Bernal before the Betis midfielder's subsequent actions led to the red card.

Betis attempted to overturn the red card

Real Betis challenged the referee's description of the incident.

The club argued that the match report did not adequately reflect what happened before the confrontation or Yamal's involvement in the incident. Betis submitted video evidence and asked the disciplinary authorities to overturn the dismissal.

As an alternative, the club requested that the incident be classified as violent conduct rather than an aggression and argued that sufficient provocation should be considered as a mitigating circumstance.

The disciplinary committee rejected those arguments.

After reviewing the video submitted by Betis, the committee concluded that the footage showed Bernal carrying out the actions described in the referee's report.

The committee therefore classified the incident under Article 103.1 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, which covers aggression against another person without causing injury. Under that provision, the punishment ranges from four to 12 matches.

Because four matches is the minimum punishment under the relevant provision, the committee imposed the four-game suspension.

Bernal to miss four Betis matches

The suspension means Bernal will be unavailable for Betis' upcoming fixtures against Celta Vigo, Málaga, Elche and Sevilla.

The punishment also applies across competitions, meaning one of the four matches is a Copa del Rey fixture.

According to Spanish reports, Bernal's suspension covers Betis' league meeting with Celta, the Copa del Rey match against Navalcarnero, the league game against Málaga and the match against Elche.

That means Bernal could potentially return for the Seville derby against Sevilla after serving the four-match suspension, although the exact availability will depend on the competition schedule and any further disciplinary developments.

Betis appeal rejected

The latest development is that Betis' appeal has also been rejected.

The RFEF Appeal Committee has maintained Bernal's four-match suspension, meaning the original punishment remains in place. Reports on Friday confirmed that the club has not succeeded in getting the ban reduced.

Betis had hoped the incident could be treated as violent conduct rather than an aggression. That distinction was important because the alternative classification could have resulted in a shorter suspension.

However, the appeal committee upheld the disciplinary body's interpretation of the incident.

Barcelona continued to dominate after red card

The red card proved costly for Betis.

Barcelona eventually completed a 5-2 victory, scoring three more goals after Bernal's dismissal. Yamal also contributed to Barcelona's attacking play, assisting Gabriel Jesus for the Catalan club's third goal.

The result turned what had been a closely contested match into a comfortable victory for Barcelona.

Bernal's dismissal was therefore a major turning point in the contest, coming shortly after Betis had restored parity.

What happened between Bernal and Yamal?

The confrontation developed during a chaotic moment shortly after the restart.

Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles became involved in an incident involving Barcelona midfielder Fermín López. Yamal then intervened, after which Bernal became involved in the confrontation.

The players exchanged physical contact before Bernal grabbed Yamal and, according to the referee's report and subsequent disciplinary ruling, headbutted him twice.

Although Betis disputed the interpretation of the incident, the disciplinary committee concluded after reviewing the available video that the actions described by the referee had occurred.

The fact that Yamal did not suffer an injury requiring medical attention did not change the disciplinary classification. The committee specifically stated that the absence of an injury did not alter its assessment of the incident.

Bernal's suspension comes at an important stage

The 23-year-old midfielder's absence is a setback for Pellegrini as Betis enter a busy period of the season.

Bernal has become part of Betis' midfield options, and his four-game suspension removes him from both domestic league and cup fixtures.

The timing is particularly significant because Betis are competing across multiple competitions, making squad depth increasingly important.

The club will now have to manage without the Uruguayan midfielder until he completes his suspension.

A costly incident for Bernal

The disciplinary decision brings an end to the initial stage of the dispute surrounding Bernal's dismissal, although reports indicate that Betis could continue examining its legal options.

The four-match ban represents the minimum punishment available under the article used by the RFEF committee.

The disciplinary authorities rejected the club's argument that the incident should be treated as violent conduct and instead determined that Bernal's actions constituted an aggression because the ball was out of play.

For Yamal, the incident did not prevent him from continuing the match or contributing to Barcelona's eventual victory.

For Bernal and Betis, however, the confrontation has resulted in a significant suspension that will keep the midfielder out of four upcoming matches.
