LONDON — Continuing their highly successful strategy of identifying and molding Europe’s elite teenage prospects, Brentford have officially finalized the signing of Austrian youth international defender Jannik Schuster. The 19-year-old center-back will complete his highly anticipated move from Red Bull Salzburg on July 1, 2026.

The total financial package is valued at €20 million (£16 million), breaking down as an initial £12 million fixed fee plus an additional £4 million structured in performance-related add-ons. To secure the long-term future of the robust defender, the Bees have tied Schuster down to a five-year contract running until June 2031, with a club option to extend the deal by an additional twelve months.

The Rise of a Modern Center-Back

Standing at an imposing 6'3" (1.90m), Schuster is widely recognized as one of the most physically gifted defensive prospects coming out of Central Europe. A youth product of the famed Red Bull Football Academy since 2020, he cut his teeth in professional football with Salzburg's secondary side, FC Liefering, before breaking out into the senior limelight.

After making a lone appearance at the tail end of the 2024/25 campaign, Schuster developed into a regular defensive pillar during the 2025/26 Austrian Football Bundesliga season. The right-footed defender clocked 29 senior appearances across all competitions, including high-stakes outings in the UEFA Europa League and traveling with the squad to the FIFA Club World Cup. Known for his aerial dominance, raw recovery pace, and high tactical composure, he registered an impressive 7.31 average match rating while also chipping in a goal and an assist as a ball-playing defender.
