LAGOS - The global aviation fuel landscape is undergoing a "seismic shift" as the Dangote Petroleum Refinery evolves from a regional player into a dominant global supplier. New data from Kpler reveals that the refinery’s jet fuel exports have surged by a staggering 770% over the last 24 months, capturing significant market share in Europe and across Africa.
Simultaneously, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced its own milestone, with crude oil trading volumes reaching a five-year peak of 1.71 million barrels per day (bpd) under the leadership of CEO Bayo Ojulari.
The Dangote Export Explosion: 2024–2026
| Market | April 2024 Volume | April 2026 Volume | Growth (%) |
| Total Global Exports | 18,000 bpd | 158,000 bpd | +770% |
| European Shipments | 0 bpd | 70,000 bpd | Infinite |
| African Shipments | 18,000 bpd | 69,000 bpd | +283% |
Strategic Advantages
• De-risking Europe: As conflict makes the Persian Gulf volatile, European airlines are turning to Dangote’s West African location as a safer and faster alternative.
• The Red Sea Factor: A tanker from Lagos can reach European ports like Rotterdam in nearly half the time it takes to navigate around contested waters in the Middle East.
• Regional Independence: By providing a localized source of fuel, the refinery is insulating African carriers from global logistics-induced price spikes.
NNPC Performance: Reaching New Heights
The NNPC’s One-Year Mandate Report (April 2025 – April 2026) outlines a series of operational victories across the upstream and downstream sectors.
Key Achievements:
Upstream Success: Subsidiary NEPL hit an all-time production peak of 365,000 bpd in December 2025.
Gas Infrastructure: The critical AKK River Niger crossing was completed in July 2025, with total gas supply reaching 7.5 billion standard cubic feet per day.
Domestic Refining: The NNPC consolidated a 7.25% equity stake in the Dangote Refinery and implemented the "crude-for-naira" program to bolster national energy security.
Transparency: The company held its first-ever earnings call in November 2025 and has maintained full monthly remittances to the Federation Account since July 2025.
Analysis: A New Energy Order
The rapid scaling of Dangote’s exports jumping 95% in just the last four months demonstrates an incredible level of operational flexibility. While the refinery has slightly reduced shipments to the Americas to prioritize higher-margin European contracts, it is also making inroads into South America and Asia, with "miscellaneous" exports hitting 19,000 bpd this month.
For Nigeria, the combination of NNPC’s trading highs and Dangote’s refining dominance suggests the country is finally capturing the full value chain of its natural resources.
