Players making their first appearances in the UEFA Champions League will have a new way to mark the occasion during the 2026/27 season, with UEFA introducing special “Debut” patches on their shirts.

The initiative, developed through UEFA’s partnership with sports merchandise company Fanatics, is designed to recognise players experiencing their first taste of European club football’s most prestigious competition.

The small patches are incorporated into the familiar Champions League starball design and will be worn by players when they make their first appearance in the tournament. The initiative began with the 2026/27 campaign, whose league phase started on September 8.

How the Champions League debut patches work

The concept is relatively simple.

When a footballer makes his Champions League debut, a special patch bearing the word “debut” is placed within the competition’s familiar starball emblem on his sleeve.

The important distinction is that simply being named in a matchday squad is not enough.

A player must actually enter the pitch to qualify for the debut patch. Therefore, a footballer who remains an unused substitute will have to wait for another opportunity before receiving one.

This means the patch becomes a physical record of the exact moment a player makes his first appearance in the Champions League.

The initiative is particularly significant for players joining established European clubs who have never previously appeared in the competition.

Among the players expected to benefit from the new system are Manchester United newcomers Bryan Mbeumo and Carlos Baleba, depending on when they make their first appearances in the competition.

The patches will become collectible cards

The most interesting part of the initiative comes after the match.

The debut patches will not simply remain on the players’ shirts.

Following the game, the patches will be removed, authenticated and transferred to Topps, the trading-card company owned by Fanatics.

Topps will then incorporate the individual patches into special trading cards featuring the players. The cards will be signed by the respective footballers before being released as collectibles.

That creates a direct link between a player’s historic first Champions League appearance and the growing sports-collectibles market.

Instead of a debut being remembered only through photographs, match reports and statistics, the actual patch worn during the occasion can eventually become a physical collector’s item.

For collectors, that could make some of the cards particularly desirable, especially if the player later develops into a major football star.

UEFA and Fanatics expand their partnership

The debut-patch initiative is part of a wider commercial relationship between UEFA and Fanatics.

UEFA initially entered into a partnership with Fanatics in 2022, and the relationship has since been extended, with the two organisations expected to continue working together through 2033.

The partnership reflects the increasing importance of sports merchandise, trading cards and memorabilia within modern football.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has described the relationship as part of efforts to provide high-quality products and experiences for football fans and collectors around the world.

The Champions League debut patches therefore represent more than a change to players’ shirts. They are also part of a broader attempt to connect major football moments with the collectibles industry.

The idea has already been used in other sports

The concept is not entirely new.

Fanatics has already been involved in similar initiatives across several major sports, including Major League Baseball, the NFL and NBA.

The concept also appeared during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where debut patches were used to identify players making their first appearances at the tournament.

The Champions League version, however, provides an opportunity to develop the concept throughout an annual club competition rather than a tournament held only every few years.

That could give collectors significantly more opportunities to obtain cards associated with famous players and memorable European matches.

Women’s Champions League set to follow

The initiative will not be limited permanently to the men’s competition.

UEFA and Fanatics are expected to introduce similar debut patches in the Women’s Champions League from the 2027/28 season.

That would give women’s football players the same opportunity to have their first appearance in Europe’s premier club competition formally recognised through the special patch system.

The move comes as UEFA continues to expand the commercial and media profile of women’s club football.

What makes the patch different from a normal Champions League badge?

The standard Champions League starball is already one of the most recognisable symbols in football.

The debut patch does not replace it.

Instead, the word “debut” is incorporated into the starball design to distinguish the shirt from those worn by players who have already appeared in the competition.

The special patch is therefore intended to mark a single milestone: a player’s first appearance in the Champions League.

Once the match has finished, that particular patch is removed and sent into the collectibles process.

Why the initiative matters

From a sporting perspective, a Champions League debut is already a major achievement.

The competition brings together many of the world’s strongest clubs and players, meaning that a first appearance can represent an important stage in a footballer’s career.

For young players, the moment can become the beginning of a long European career.

For established players who have moved to Europe or joined a club that qualifies for the competition, it can also represent a new chapter.

The debut patch gives that moment an additional physical and commercial dimension.

It could also create an interesting historical record years from now.

If a young player eventually becomes a Champions League winner or one of the world’s leading footballers, the card containing the patch from his first appearance could become a highly sought-after piece of memorabilia.

The 2026/27 Champions League begins a new chapter

The debut-patch programme arrives as the Champions League enters another season under its expanded league-phase format.

The competition continues with 36 teams participating in the league phase, following the format introduced in the 2024/25 season. The 2026/27 league phase began on September 8, 2026.

As new players step onto the pitch for the first time, their debut patches will provide a visible reminder that they are entering one of football’s biggest stages.

For fans watching the matches, the small detail may initially appear to be just another change to the competition’s branding.

But for the players involved — and potentially for collectors in the years ahead — the patches could become much more significant.

A footballer’s first Champions League appearance happens only once.

Now, UEFA and Fanatics are giving that moment a physical keepsake that can follow the player long after the final whistle.
