ODENSE, Denmark — Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at home with his family after collapsing during an international friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Condition and Recovery

The 34 year-old, who currently plays for German club VfL Wolfsburg, took to social media on Monday morning to reassure fans of his improving condition.

"I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family," Eriksen wrote on Instagram. "As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD [Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator] has had a major effect on both me and my family, but I want to assure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021. I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started."

The Incident

The match at Odense Stadium was abandoned in the 65th minute after Eriksen collapsed off the ball.Teammates and medical staff reacted immediately, forming a protective ring around the midfielder. Eriksen regained consciousness quickly and was able to walk off the pitch unassisted before being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

 

Denmark’s national team physician, Morten Boesen, confirmed that Eriksen’s ICD fitted following his life-saving recovery from a cardiac arrest at the 2021 European Championship functioned exactly as intended. "As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should," Boesen stated. "He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly."

 

Solidarity and Response

The abandonment of the match drew praise for the dignity shown by both teams. Following the incident, players and coaching staff from Denmark and Ukraine gathered in a circle at the center of the pitch in a moment of solidarity, while fans in the stadium chanted the midfielder's name.

Denmark head coach Brian Riemer expressed gratitude for the response: "The most important thing is that Christian is doing well. Now it's about standing together and ensuring that everyone has a shoulder to lean on."

Eriksen, who has enjoyed a resilient professional career including stints at Brentford and Manchester United, is now focusing on his recovery and spending time with his family.
