BARCELONA — Teenage forward Hamza Abdelkarim has been named in Egypt’s preliminary squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The inclusion of the 18-year-old striker stands out as one of the most notable selections by head coach Hossam Hassan. Abdelkarim only arrived in Spain during the winter transfer window, joining Barcelona on loan from Cairo-based club Al Ahly.

With his selection, he is on track to become the first Egyptian player in Barcelona's history to represent the Pharaohs at a senior World Cup tournament.

Impressive Start in the Youth Ranks

Abdelkarim has primarily featured for Barcelona’s Under-19 team (Juvenil A) and Barcelona Atlètic since his move to Europe. Despite a brief delay due to registration paperwork, the young striker quickly adjusted, scoring five goals in his first seven league appearances for the youth side.

His performances, including a recent hat-trick against UD Montecarlo, have kept him on the radar of senior club officials. Reports from Spain indicate that Barcelona sporting director Deco has already notified Al Ahly of the club's intention to activate the permanent purchase option in his loan agreement.

The permanent transfer is expected to be finalized this summer, with the initial fee reportedly set at €1.5 million, potentially rising to €5 million with performance add-ons.

Squad Balance and Group Stage Preparation

Abdelkarim’s inclusion in the national team comes at a time of transition for Egypt's frontline. While veteran forward Mostafa Mohamed was a surprise omission from the tournament roster after a quiet domestic season with Nantes, Hassan has opted for youth to complement established stars.

Abdelkarim will join Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who captains the side, and Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush in the attacking rotation. Given his quick rise, sports journalists suggest the World Cup could serve as an opportunity for the teenager to earn a spot in Hansi Flick's first-team pre-season plans at Barcelona.

Egypt is scheduled to play a final home friendly against Russia in Cairo on May 28 before the roster is trimmed to the mandatory 26-man limit. The Pharaohs will then travel to the United States for a friendly against Brazil on June 6.

Egypt opens its World Cup campaign in Group G against Belgium in Seattle on June 15, before facing New Zealand in Vancouver and Iran back in Seattle.
