Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since the 2016/17 season, progressing 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the second leg.
Diego Simeone’s side came into the clash at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, but Barcelona wasted no time in responding. The visitors stunned the home crowd with two early goals, as Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres struck within the opening 25 minutes to level the tie on aggregate.
However, Atletico showed resilience under pressure and quickly regained control of the contest. A well-worked attacking move saw Ademola Lookman finish clinically in the 31st minute, restoring Atletico’s aggregate lead and shifting the momentum back in their favour.
Barcelona pushed for another comeback in the second half, introducing attacking options in a bid to turn the tie around, but struggled to break down a disciplined Atletico defence. Their hopes were further dented late in the match when Eric Garcia was sent off after bringing down Alexander Sorloth as the last man.
Despite late pressure, Barcelona failed to find the equaliser that would have forced extra time, with their final opportunity going begging deep into stoppage time.
Atletico will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, with the first leg scheduled for late April.
Fast Start from Barcelona Not Enough
Barcelona began the match with urgency and belief, quickly erasing Atletico’s first-leg advantage. Yamal was particularly influential early on, creating problems for the Atletico defence and opening the scoring with a composed finish.
Torres soon added a second, capitalising on a well-controlled move to fire past the goalkeeper from a tight angle and bring the tie level.
But Atletico responded with composure, relying on quick transitions and clinical finishing. Lookman’s goal proved decisive, as it ultimately secured their passage to the next round.
Simeone’s Experience Proves Key
Atletico’s game management in the latter stages highlighted their experience at this level. Simeone’s side remained organised defensively and looked dangerous on the counter-attack, limiting Barcelona’s chances despite sustained pressure.
The Spanish side now turns attention to the semi-finals, where a tough challenge awaits against either Arsenal or Sporting.
Barcelona Exit Despite Promising Performance
For Barcelona, the result marks another Champions League disappointment, though there were positives in their performance. The team showed attacking intent and created several opportunities but lacked the clinical edge needed at this level.
With a young squad continuing to develop, they will look to build on this experience and return stronger in future campaigns.
