LAGOS -The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) has defied global geopolitical tensions to record a historic N16.13 trillion appreciation in market capitalization since the start of April 2026. This 12.5% surge has pushed the total market value to a record N145.33 trillion, fueled by strong corporate earnings and Nigeria’s official reclassification by FTSE Russell.

Investors are reacting positively to Nigeria’s transition from "unclassified" back to Frontier Market status, a move expected to attract between $840 million and $1.04 billion in new foreign inflows.

New Leadership at the Finance Ministry

The market rally coincides with a transition in Nigeria's economic leadership. Mr. Taiwo Oyedele has officially assumed office as the new Minister of Finance, taking over from Mr. Wale Edun.

In his first official remarks, Oyedele committed to sustaining the momentum of ongoing fiscal reforms. He emphasized a focus on "measurable impact" across key sectors and praised the foundational work laid by his predecessor in stabilizing the macroeconomic environment.

The ‘Green Tax’: New Levies on High-Engine Vehicles

While the stock market celebrates, vehicle owners are facing new fiscal measures. Effective July 1, 2026, the Federal Government will introduce a Green Tax Surcharge on high-engine capacity vehicles.

Approved by President Bola Tinubu, this surcharge is part of the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures (FPM) aimed at aligning Nigeria’s tax framework with global environmental goals.

The New Tax Breakdown:

  •  2,000cc to 3,999cc Engines: 2% surcharge.

  •  4,000cc Engines and Above: 4% surcharge.

  •  Exemptions: Vehicles under 2,000cc, electric vehicles (EVs), mass transit               buses, and locally manufactured vehicles.

Economic Outlook: What’s Driving the Surge?

Analysts at Cordros Research suggest that the re-entry into the FTSE Frontier Market universe is a game-changer for capital formation. The reclassification connects local opportunities to global capital, particularly as international investors seek out markets with improving infrastructure and transparency.

Furthermore, the 2026 FPM has introduced reduced import duties on 127 tariff lines to stimulate growth in critical sectors. For example, the total effective rate for crude palm oil has been slashed to 28.75%, down from previous high-tariff regimes.
