AKURE, Nigeria — Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has disclosed that security agencies successfully thwarted a sophisticated plot to bomb the Government House in Akure several months ago. The Governor revealed the details of the operation during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

Operation Details

According to Governor Aiyedatiwa, the planned attack was uncovered through proactive intelligence gathering. A joint operation involving the Nigeria Police Force and the state’s security network, Amotekun, was launched to neutralize the threat.

Tactical Intervention: Security operatives tracked the suspects to a hotel and subsequently to a rented apartment where materials intended for the attack were discovered.

Arrests: The suspects involved were apprehended during the raid and remain in custody pending further investigation.

Motive Under Review: While the plot was successfully halted, the Governor noted that investigators are currently working to determine the full motive and identify potential sponsors behind the planned strike.

Governor’s Stance on Security

Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the incident underscores the often-unseen work performed by state security agencies to prevent disasters before they occur. "Security is one responsibility that leaders carry that is not so visible to everybody," Aiyedatiwa stated. "It is only when there is a lapse that it will look as if the government has not been doing enough. We have been doing so much."

He reaffirmed the commitment of South-West governors to strengthening regional security through enhanced intelligence sharing and collaboration between the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), Amotekun, and local communities.

Justice for 2022 Owo Attack

During the same appearance, the Governor welcomed the recent conviction of four suspects linked to the tragic June 5, 2022, terror attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo. He described the judicial outcome as a significant victory for the rule of law and a moment of closure for the families of the more than 40 victims who lost their lives in the tragedy.
