NYON — UEFA has confirmed that Liverpool and Real Betis will participate in the 2026–27 UEFA Champions League, having secured the prestigious "European Performance Spots" awarded to the top two performing national associations from the 2025–26 season.
How the European Performance Spots Work
Under the established format for European club competitions, the two associations with the best collective performance by their clubs throughout the 2025–26 season earn an additional automatic place in the following season’s Champions League league phase.
This extra spot is allocated to the highest-ranked team in the respective domestic league that had not already qualified through their standard finishing position (the top four in both the Premier League and La Liga).
The 2025–26 Coefficient Winners
England and Spain finished as the top two associations in the 2025–26 season association club coefficients, calculated based on the average points earned by all clubs from those nations across UEFA competitions.
• England: Achieved an average coefficient of 28.347.
• Spain: Achieved an average coefficient of 22.093.
Qualified Clubs
By finishing 5th in their respective domestic leagues, both clubs secured the additional path into Europe’s elite competition:
| Association | Club | League Finish |
| England | Liverpool | 5th |
| Spain | Real Betis | 5th |
These two clubs will now join the direct qualifiers in the 36-team league phase for the 2026/27 campaign, alongside other automatic entrants from across Europe, as well as the winners of the 2025/26 Champions League and Europa League.
