VANCOUVER — Canada secured its first-ever victory in the FIFA World Cup on Thursday, delivering a resounding 6-0 performance against an ill-disciplined Qatar side at BC Place. The emphatic win places co-host Canada in a commanding position within Group B as the tournament progresses.

A First-Half Masterclass

The match began with Canada imposing an immediate high-energy tempo that Qatar struggled to contain. The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin bundled home the opener after goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada could only parry a fierce strike from Jonathan David.

Canada continued to press their advantage, and David doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a clinical 18-yard volley. The contest took a significant turn shortly thereafter when Qatar’s Homam Ahmed was issued a straight red card for a foul on Tajon Buchanan, reducing the visitors to ten men. Just before the halftime whistle, David extended the lead to 3-0, effectively putting the game out of reach for the depleted Qatari defense.

Second-Half Rout and Injury Concern

Qatar’s discipline collapsed entirely after the interval. In the 52nd minute, Assim Madibo was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Ismaël Koné, leaving Qatar with only nine players on the field. The incident resulted in a serious injury for Koné, who had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Despite the setback, Canada maintained its clinical edge. Koné’s replacement, Nathan Saliba, curled a spectacular 22-yard free kick into the net to make it 4-0. The margin widened further in the 75th minute when Qatar's Mohamed Al Mannai turned a Jacob Shaffelburg shot into his own net. Jonathan David capped off his hat-trick and the team's historic night by hammering home a final goal in stoppage time.

With this victory, Canada moved to four points in Group B, positioning them strongly for a place in the last 32.Qatar, left at the bottom of the group, faced an uphill battle to keep their tournament hopes alive in their final match.
